Fr. Bonian is an Eastern Rite Jesuit who has worked with Chaldean, Maronite, Coptic and Byzantine communities in the United States, the Holy Land, and the Near East. Born in Iran and raised in Iraq, he joined the Jesuits after graduating from Baghdad College a year before they were ousted from Iraq (1969). Father Bonian holds an M.Div. from Weston School of Theology, an STL from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, and an APD from Fordham University. Over the years he has worked to integrate Eastern and Ignatian spirituality. These adaptations of the Spiritual Exercises—together with the use of icons—have been useful in his retreat work with individuals and groups in both the Middle East and the USA.
